The University of Iowa Health Care, Department of Internal Medicine, has an opening for an Asst Research Scientist/Engineer to conduct highly technical and specialized scientific research in studying genes influencing cardiovascular disease by independently securing funding; performing research experiments, simulations and theoretical investigations; analyzing data; and disseminating research findings. Key areas of responsibility include experiments, simulations, modeling or theoretical investigations; data/research analysis and evaluation; dissemination of research results; research proposals/grants; service; and human resources/supervision. Duties will include design and execution of experiments, performing mouse surgeries for generating cardiac hypertrophy and heart failure models, intravenous injections, molecular and biochemical analyses of gene/protein expression, assessment of tissue pathology, data analyses and presentation, preparation of manuscripts and grant applications.
A Doctoral degree in Molecular and Cellular Biology, cardiovascular sciences, or related discipline
1-3 years of heart disease research
Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required.
Experience establishing and maintaining in vitro cell culture models, transfection and RNAi application, and standard molecular cloning techniques is required.
Record of peer-reviewed publications in the field is required.
Technical expertise with transverse aortic constriction (TAC) surgery and jugular/temporal vein injections in mice is required.
Experience with dissection and harvest of heart and/or other tissues
RNA and protein isolation and analyses (Q-PCR, western blot) is required.
Experience with Microsoft Word, PowerPoint and Excel, Adobe Photoshop, and Adobe Illustrator
Experience trouble-shooting protocols, statistically analyzing data, teaching and supervising lab personnel in various techniques, and writing peer-reviewed manuscripts and grant applications is required.
Experience with neonatal or adult cardiomyocyte isolation from small animals is required.
Experience with tissue processing and staining (cyrosectioning, IHC, IF, confocal microscopy), mitochondria isolation and functional analyses (Seahorse, calcium uptake), testing of mouse phenotypes (EKG, GTT, ITT) is required.
Experience with use of adeno-associated virus vectors, genotyping and maintaining mouse colonies is highly desirable.
