In accordance with the Iowa Civil Rights Act, employment advertising expressing a preference as to age, race, color, religion, creed, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin or disability cannot be accepted by The Gazette unless the advertiser files an affidavit with this newspaper, who in turn must submit the affidavit to the Civil Rights Commission. In essence, the affidavit must set out the complete basis upon which the employer relies in concluding that a particular preference is required for the job being advertised and the employer "truly believes" the preference to be bona fide and that the employer, and not the newspaper or publisher of the ad, is responsible for its content. (Affidavits may be obtained from The Gazette's Classified Advertising Department.)
